The ministry of FoCUS is deeply connected to the heart of Jesus' ministry in that it is incarnational, focused on our neighbor, and missional.
The ministry of FoCUS is incarnational. FoCUS connects with students where they are, not where we would like them to be. Our ministry is labor-intensive because it happens through relationships and sharing life together. There is no other way to reach students with the love of Christ.
FoCUS is focused on our neighbor. Most students do not have a pre-existing relationship with a church in Berkeley. The students we reach are not connected to us in any way, except that they are our neighbors, and God calls us to love our neighbor. For over 125 years, First Pres has seen Cal students (and those at other nearby colleges) as its neighbors, and our college ministry is the primary way we live this out.

FoCUS is missional. Every year, the students we reach are sent out into the world to work for justice and mercy. These are not "our" students, but God's. We know that by investing in them, we are investing in the mission of God in the world, inside and outside of the church. These qualities of college ministry are never more clearly evidenced than in the ministry of our interns. Perhaps you have personally been blessed by an intern who reached out to you, came along aside you, and helped prepare you for the day you would leave college.
The ministry of FoCUS depends upon the ministry of interns. The more interns we support, the greater the reach we have into the university community. Please consider supporting an intern and First Pres' ministry to students at Cal.
