LETTER TO THE CONGREGATION FROM SESSION
Welcome Rev. Dr. Charlene Han Powell!
Monday, August 31
Dear First Pres,
We are delighted to announce that the congregation voted overwhelmingly to extend a call to the Rev. Dr. Charlene Han Powell as our next Senior Pastor and Head of Staff at yesterday’s Congregational Meeting. As the vote was announced by Pastor and Acting Head of Staff Mark Stryker, there was much celebration and deep gratitude for God’s provision of this loving and gifted pastor. To learn more about Charlene Han Powell, please explore the various resources on our website.
We are grateful to the Pastor Nominating Committee members for their work on our behalf and thank them again for their diligence and prayerfulness in selecting Charlene Han Powell as their nominee. To you, our brothers and sisters in Christ, we want to convey our thanks in helping us to conduct our virtual meeting with very few glitches—your flexibility and goodwill during this time of COVID-19 has been remarkable.
In terms of what’s next, here are a few key dates:
Next Sunday, September 6 – Charlene will join us (virtually) directly after worship for a 45-minute conversation with Mark Stryker. This will be a light- hearted time with some Q&A between Mark and Charlene mixed in.
Wednesday, October 12 – Charlene’s first day “in the office.”
Sunday, October 18 – Welcome the Powell family! Charlene preaches in worship as our new Senior Pastor followed by a time of celebration for a new season of ministry together.
Service of Installation – Date to be scheduled—more details to come.
Please join us in praying for Charlene, her children Amelie and Noa, husband Jordan Powell, and Fifth Avenue Presbyterian Church (FAPC). In these next few weeks, Charlene will be busy wrapping up her time at FAPC as her family prepares to relocate to the Bay Area. We want to assist her in easing the transition and allow her space to end well with her current congregation—to that end, we are refraining from engaging her in First Pres matters until she is here, boots on the ground, in October. We look forward to communicating about “getting to know Charlene” gatherings and events that are being planned for October and November as we get closer to her start date. As always, if you have any questions, please email us at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Thank you First Pres Berkeley! We love you and we love our church, and it is out of deep gratitude to God that we embark on this next season of ministry together.
