It is with great sadness that I have to inform you that the Mexico 2020 Trip has been canceled. After much deliberation between the Youth Staff and Pastoral Staff, as well as input from the Personnel Committee and Elders, we have come to the conclusion that due to the COVID-19 global pandemic, it is best for everyone involved to not go to Mexico this summer.
We know that many students will be disappointed by the decision, and want you to know we do not take this decision lightly. As the Youth Staff, we are called to care for and love our students, families, and those we serve, and we feel this decision is the one that does those things best. We hope that you will trust us in our discernment process.
There are quite a few reasons why we have decided to cancel this year’s trip. At the present time, the border between the United States and Mexico is closed, and we do not know when it will re-open. This poses challenges in planning for the trip–both logistically and financially. We are also getting new information everyday about the spread and projections of this virus, as well as changing CDC guidelines, extending the shelter in place, etc.; thus, we do not know what the pandemic will look like in June. But, we recognize that the peak of the virus in Mexico could be behind the United States’ timeline. With all that being said, the decision to cancel our trip was ultimately made because we do not want to risk the health of anyone involved with this trip, including those we’d be serving in Mexico, as well as members of our own team.
We spoke with Pastor Javier recently to let him know of our concerns and our decision. He, of course, is sad that we are not coming this summer, but shared similar concerns as us. We decided that something tangible we can do for his church is to send a video to them. If you would like to make a short video, send them over to email@example.com. Make sure it is less than 10 seconds long, since we will be compiling them all together (please film it landscape format). In your video, you can say hello, that you miss them (if you’ve been on the trip before), are praying for them, etc. We can add Spanish subtitles at the bottom, so both English and Spanish speakers can watch.
We realize that canceling this trip is disappointing for all of us. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out. Take care during this quarantine; we’re looking forward to seeing you after it is over.
Thank you for understanding,
